This week in swimming we were able to go into the big, deep pool. The children were excited but apprehensive. They were learning about water safety and what to do in an emergency.

Digital Ignite with Alfie

03 September 2018 At Rowandale School we are very lucky to welcome Alfie who is part of the Digital Ignite, Mapura Matikito team. Digital Ignite deliver STEAM lessons to children all over Aotearoa. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths. We are very fortunate in #Whakapono21 that on Monday we were able to learn about an app called Makers Empire and 3D printing . The app called Makers Empire can be downloaded onto your phone, ipad or device at home. The app helps children to design different things. Once you have designed your product on Makers Empire you can then print it on a 3D printer. The students were really astounded by what they could do with a 3D printer. Today the task was to design a shoe. The kids were amazed by what they could do on Makers Empire. They could literally make exactly what they wanted the shoe to look like. Pepeha

This term we are starting to learn the pepeha for our area that we live in. We will be looking at standing in front of our class and saying the pepeha. We will also look into finding out the key information needed for our own personal pepeha. It is a great opportunity for us to practise our pronunciation of Te Reo Māori and to also build our confidence in standing in front of people to speak. We will be using our pepeha in handwriting to help us memorise it and our class just got a floor mat that will also help us on our journey too. Speech semi-finals

30 October 2018 Today Whakapono21 had two students particate in the syndicate speech semi-finals. They were Ryley Swatton who was talking about Go-Kan-Ryu Karate and Deekon Harris who spoke about learning to fish. I am very proud of them and every other student that stood up in front of everyone to give their speech. All the students put a lot of effort into writing their speeches and also working on their delivery. There were six finalists chosen for the finals. They were for year 6 - Nora, Gizelle and Angelina and for year 5 - Ryley, Tamika and Jordan. Ryley was ecstatic to get into the finals and will represent our class on Thursday, 1 November at 9.30am in the school hall. If you are free please come down to support our kids.
